How the regions work
The U.S. is divided into five Petroleum Administration Defense Districts (PADDs). Prices vary by region because of refining capacity, transport distance, and state fuel taxes — West Coast (PADD 5) is usually highest, Gulf Coast (PADD 3) usually lowest.
- PADD 1 East Coast — CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, NC, PA, RI, SC, VT, VA, WV
- PADD 2 Midwest — IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, OK, SD, TN, WI
- PADD 3 Gulf Coast — AL, AR, LA, MS, NM, TX
- PADD 4 Rocky Mountain — CO, ID, MT, UT, WY
- PADD 5 West Coast — AK, AZ, CA, HI, NV, OR, WA

What is the diesel price today?
The chart above shows this week's national and regional on-highway diesel averages, updated weekly from the official federal price series. Regional numbers matter more than the national one — the spread between the Gulf Coast and California is routinely more than a dollar a gallon.
Why are diesel prices so different by region?
Mostly state fuel taxes and distribution costs, plus regional refinery capacity. Same truck, same fuel — a fill-up can cost $150+ more on one side of a state line.
How do diesel prices affect what a load pays?
Fuel cost per mile = diesel price ÷ your MPG. At $3.90 and 6 MPG that's $0.65 of every mile before anything else. Our free cost-per-mile and fuel-surcharge calculators turn this week's price into your per-mile numbers.
