How fuel cost is calculated
Miles are practical driving routes from Google's distance matrix. Diesel price is pulled live from a federal weekly retail benchmark — regional if we can identify the origin state, national otherwise. Miles ÷ MPG = gallons; gallons × price = cost.
Heads-up: actual pump price varies ±50¢ from the regional average depending on the truck stop. Use this for go/no-go decisions, not precise budgeting.

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. A 700-mile run at 6 MPG and $3.90 diesel burns about 117 gallons — roughly $455 in fuel. This calculator does that math with real routed miles and current regional prices.
What's the difference between practical miles and shortest miles?
Practical miles follow routes a truck can actually drive — truck-legal roads, realistic routing — and are what most rate negotiations assume. Shortest miles cut through routes a Class 8 truck can't or shouldn't take, which understates the trip.
