What the fields mean
- Authority status — “Authorized” means the operating authority is active. “Revoked,” “inactive,” or “pending” means it isn't active on the federal record right now.
- Insurance on file — brokers file a surety bond (BMC-84) or trust fund (BMC-85). Cargo insurance is on the carrier, not the broker.
- Safety rating — the federal rating from a compliance review: “Satisfactory,” “Conditional,” or “Unsatisfactory.” Many companies have never been rated.
- Out-of-service rate — the share of roadside inspections that ended with a vehicle or driver placed out of service.

Can an MC check tell me if a broker is safe to work with?

How do I check an MC number's status?
Type the MC number in the box above and run the check. The result shows the operating authority status as the federal record lists it today — active (authorized), inactive, revoked or pending — and the date the record was read. Re-check before each new broker; status can change.
What does it mean if an MC number shows as not authorized?
It means the federal record doesn't list active operating authority for that number right now — it may be revoked, inactive, pending or never granted. The result shows the exact status the record gives. What you do with it is your call.
Is this the same data as the federal lookup site?
It comes from the same public federal registration and safety records, shown in one plain result with the date it was read. For the official source, the result links to the federal record for that number.
What's the difference between an MC number and a DOT number?
A USDOT number identifies a company for safety monitoring; an MC number grants operating authority to move regulated freight or broker loads. Brokers have MC authority of the broker type. Our MC vs DOT guide covers the details.
